One of the many things that COVID-19 has upended has been how our parish prepares children for their first Holy Communion and teens for their Confirmation. Faced with the challenge of transitioning to distance learning, I, together with our directors of religious education, made the decision to not receive any new 1st year students into our program this past fall. We did this so we could focus all of our time and energy on completing the 2nd year of preparation for the first Holy Communion and Confirmation students online. The classes for this group are finishing now and they will soon be going to confession and receiving their Sacraments.
Our catechists did an excellent job adapting to online catechism. However, some of the limitations of distance learning became clear as well. Additionally the challenge of the pandemic has made it all the more urgent to address some of the ways our program has needed to improve for many years now. We simply can no longer do the same old thing but now online. With that in mind we have decided to dedicate a period of several months to some serious restructuring of our religious education program.
We have a threefold goal in this program restructuring:
To provide a deeper level of training and preparation to our catechists
To involve parents more in the faith formation of their children
To increase children and teen’s connection to the community of the church, their ability to pray and their desire to receive the sacraments through the attendance of Mass.
In order to take the time we need to improve we will not be registering new students until May of this year. Rest assured we are also committed to offering a program that will prepare children and teens to receive their sacraments by the summer of 2022. These changes are not going to set anyone back a year or prevent a teen from receiving Confirmation before going off to college who otherwise would have.
I thank you for your patience as we take the time to make these needed changes. I am confident that we can take the good things we already have here in our parish and build upon them in amazing ways.
We will continue to keep you updated through the parish bulletin, the parish website and our religious education Facebook page: Sacred Heart Religious Education
There are many processes offered for our parish children and youths in which we emphasize prayer, scripture, liturgy, community service and social justice. We encourage you to become active in the faith formation of our parish children by volunteering your time and talents in any of our religious education processes.
We look forward to spending time with you and your children as we all journey in discipleship.

Full Christian Initiation
All school age youth (between the ages of 7 and 17) that have not been baptized and wish to become Catholic undergo an intense catechetical and faith formation process. This process can take 2 years or more to prepare a child for baptism, depending on the child and their family. Children & youths meet for regular catechesis in regular catechism classes. Additionally, faith formation groups (meeting in conjunction with the Sunday liturgy) meet for scripture study and mass. This intense process will prepare the child/youth for full initiation into the Catholic Church receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist.
Sacred Heart / St. Benedict Catholic Community Teen Confirmation Process is provided for baptized teens (who have received the sacraments of First Eucharist and Reconciliation) in grades 9-12 to make preparations in their journey of faith to complete their Catholic Christian initiation by receiving the sacrament of Confirmation.
By choosing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation teens are saying to the community, “YES, I am ready to walk on my own in my faith journey!” It is a time when teens will put into practice Jesus’ teachings. It is a time when teens will be proud to be a Catholic Christian and set an example for others to witness.
We understand that many teens are not sure about their faith or about receiving this sacrament. As parents and educators ourselves we know that being confirmed is a decision that the teens must ultimately make themselves however, it is all of our responsibility to share our faith with them so they will hear God speaking to them and make the choice to follow Him.
We at Sacred Heart / St. Benedict have a dedicated team of both adults and confirmed teens, who have gone through this process and now want to share their faith with the teens of our parish so they will be able to make that choice when their time comes.
The Sacred Heart / St. Benedict confirmation process is an intensive two-year faith formation process involving faith sharing, catechesis, community service, liturgical participation, and prayerful retreats. Parents and sponsors are an integral part of this process and are also involved every step of the way.
We welcome every teen (and their parents) to come and discover what God has in store for them.
By the sacrament of Confirmation, (the baptized) are more perfectly bound to the church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.”
